Government Federal Investigator

"I am a Federal Investigator for the Office for Civil Rights with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. I am on the team of attorneys who enforce the HIPAA Privacy Rule, protecting the medical privacy for individuals who live in the 8 southeastern United States. My educational background includes a masters in special education from Vanderbilt and a law degree from the University of Florida with an additional certificate in Family & Children's Law. My previous professional roles include working for the Florida Department of Education as a legal compliance specialist, being a fellow on the Center of Children & Families with the University of Florida, a special education teacher for elementary aged children with multiple disabilities and serving as an early intervention therapist for infants and toddlers with disabilities. I currently mentor high school, undergraduate and graduate students in helping them with making critical decisions about their current and next steps educationally and professionally."

"Working for the federal government provides opportunities for individuals with backgrounds and expertise in numerous professional areas. I am able to explain the process of obtaining internships and employment within the federal government. There is a specific process in answering the questions that goes beyond the norm of applying for jobs. When you apply for the majority of full time employment positions available, who you know doesn't matter and is not as beneficial as the way you answer the questions connected with the job posting. I would also encourage current students to seek internships within the federal government within their specific areas of interests. Your time in the federal government is cumulative even if there is a gap between your internship and your full time career employment. You also do not have to work for the same federal agency in order for your time to be counted cumulatively. This is advantageous as an individuals' time for tenure within the federal government is accelerated since prior internship experiences, whether paid or volunteer, can be counted."
